✨Travels in Spain is a classic 19th-century travel memoir by the French Romantic writer Théophile Gautier. In May 1840, Gautier traveled by coach from Paris down through Bordeaux and across the Iberian Peninsula alongside art collector Eugène Piot. He was hired by the French journal La Presse to send back regular dispatches and impressions of his journey. The book records his observations of local customs, traditional dress, regional food, stagecoach travel, the spectacle of the bullfight, and historical-architectural landmarks like the Alhambra in Granada. Gautier viewed Spain through the lens of French Romanticism, portraying it as a passionate, untamed land of mystery, stark contrasts, and medieval survivals.
