1858 Lyra Germanica: Christian Hymn Books

1858 Lyra Germanica: Hymns for The Sundays and Chief Festivals of The Christian Year. Translated into English from the German by Catherine Winkworth. Published in London by Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts. This book is a famous collection of German Christian Hymns. They have beautiful custom leather spines with florals! There is also a sweet inscription written at the front of each book from the year it was published, 1858.
The first series follows the church calendar, arranged by Sundays and chief festivals from Advent onward. While the second series focuses on themes of the inner spiritual life, penitence, faith, and hope. The hymns emphasize a believer’s longing for a deep, personal connection with Jesus Christ. It became a foundational resource for Victorian church worship and private devotional reading. ✨This book has “long s’s”… so they look like the letter “f” throughout the text. This was an old-fashioned way of writing the lowercase letter "s" that looks a lot like a modern lowercase "f".
