The Budding Burrow

1808 Bidcombe Hill Poetry Book with Hidden Fore-edge Painting

1808 Bidcombe Hill Poetry Book with Hidden Fore-edge Painting

1808 Bidcombe Hill, With Other Rural Poems by Rev. Francis Skurray (1774-1848). Published in London… First edition copy! It is bound in green straight grained Moroccan leather with elaborate decorative gilt details on the cover, spine and inside bordering! It also has beautiful engravings inside!

It contains a Pastoral Fore-edge painting of St. Bees College in Cumberland (it does state this in writing on one of the first pages of the book).
The painted scene presents a pastoral tableau, with St. Bees College in Wiltshire in the background. It has little cottages, trees and two Shepards with their sheep! The colors are soft, capturing the typical grey English afternoon.
This is a 19th century painting that is believed to have been done before 1850!
The book is a collection of poems that was described by “The British Critic and Quarterly Theological Review” as an “elegantly printed volume of local poetry, which was particularly interesting”.
The information and history on this book is printed out and will come with it! It also comes in its original hard cover case! This is a true one of a kind book with painting… you can see the watercolor marks on each page end and it’s just in amazing condition. You won’t find another like this!!
