The Budding Burrow

Large Black Leather Holy Bible (c. 1860s)

Large Black Leather Holy Bible (c. 1860s)

Antique The Holy Bible (c.1860s) containing the Old & New Testaments: translated out of the original tongues, & with the former translations diligently compared and revised, with Canne’s marginal notes and references, together with the Apocrypha. It also contains an alphabetical table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments with their significations and a table of scripture weights, measures and coins.
This copy was published by John E. Beardsley, it does not have a copyright date… but it does contain a hand written inscription from 1865, saying it was gifted to Sarah B. Elliott by her husband.
*I did a lot of research, trying to see if this was Sarah Barnwell Elliott’s Bible… which would have had special provenance… but the dates didn’t match up exactly to the history written in this book and I believe she never married… so this is another Sarah B. Elliott. Her family history is written inside the book under marriages, births and deaths… it mentions her husband’s name as Edmund Elliott and her maiden name used to be Sarah B. Dearborn. It also lists their children and family.
This book is special because of the beautiful, unique detailing on the cover! It is bound in black leather, with gold gilt detailing… it does have some wear from use and age, the hinges are cracked, but still held together well. Overall this is actually in great condition for its age and size!
There are some beautiful engravings inside as well… it is 11.75” tall, 9.5” wide and 3” thick at the spine.
