1856 The Plays of William Shakespeare- Prized Bindings
1856 The Plays of William Shakespeare, Four Random Volumes from a Set. Prized bindings… Written by Alexander Chalmers and published in London. This is a very unique set… they have a family chest and coat of arms embossed on the front of the books and the spine… they have a lot of wear to the spines from use and age… you can tell these were well loved and read often! This is a great decorative set and you can read the various plays they contain by Shakespeare… I just loved the look of the covers displayed! They are bound in full calf leather with decorative gold gilt detailing.
*I tried to research the names on the bookplates or the crests… but I was not able to find much. To my knowledge, they look Scottish. The crest with the pigs on it… says Cambridge school, so that would be a school crest.
There are some engravings in the front of the books and some tipped in photos as well.
